The Teviot Pontoon – London, UK

February 2022 – Planning

The canoeing pontoon is a community project designed to activate the Limehouse Cut as a blue asset for the local community. Supported by the London Marathon Foundation, it forms part of a series of meanwhile projects delivered in connection with the planned regeneration of the Teviot estate and particular the redesign of the public realm to the northern boundary facing the canal. Developed in collaboration with the future operator, MOO Canoes, the pontoon is proposed to be used for family and group orientated water-based activities such as kayaking and paddle boarding, as well as canal clean-up programmes. Alongside the proposed pontoon deck, the design includes a generous quantity of floating ecosystem beds (Biomatrix systems) and planter space on deck, intended to enhance the biodiversity of the area. The pontoon deck is elevated to form three illuminated ‘lanterns’ that serve as beacons to make the activities of the pontoon visible throughout the day. The siting of the proposed pontoon has been carefully considered in view of these future improvement works, including a potential pedestrian bridge link to the northern side of the canal.
