Venice – Study Trip

2011

Levels, Links, Connections & Interfaces

During the Study trip to Venice, students were asked to find and document examples of the following urban conditions:

a. level change along water front
b. link across water
c. land to water connection
d. building as interface between land and water

Each team of students was given one of these conditions to analyze and eventually share to the rest of the Studio in a show and tell slide presentation on return. The information generated served as reference for the two projects developed during the year.

Using sketches, diagrams, photographs and video the teams gathered enough information to cover some  questions such as the relevance in relation to Regent's Canal, context, dimensions, materials, patterns of people occupation, etc. Students had to be critical about the findings and determine how successful the space is and what could have been done instead if faced with a similar challenge.
